All lectures from 9.00 until 12.00 a.m.


Welcome to the history course on Hong Kong. We only have four weeks in which to complete this course and so naturally we cannot cover the whole area in detail in the time available. However, at the end of this course you will know a lot more about this most fascinating territory in the Far East. I have tried to bring in some outside lecturers to liven things up for you and have arranged a number of visits that I think you will find interesting. So let's begin.


Week 1.     June 19,20 21

Introduction. Models of Hong Kong's Developments.

The pre-British Hong Kong period.
The  Pure Colonial Model          1841 - 1967.
The Consultative Model          1967 - 1984
The Joint Declaration Model     1984 -1997
The Basic Law Model           1997 ----

1.  Activity: Thursday. 21 June Walk over the Pokfulam Path to the reservoir.
2.    Choosing the group project for assessment and selecting the topic.


Week 2.     June 26, 27 and 28    (Monday 25 June is a public holiday)

The Colonial Model. 1841 -1967
The nineteenth century.
Assumptions of Colonial model and the gradual changes.
Political arrangements
Economic Changes.
Health and social arrangements.
Change in China. End of Empire, Republic and the establishment of the People's Republic of China.
The two world wars and the immediate post war period.

1.     Activity Wednesday          Trip to Happy Valley.
2.     Researching topic for assessment.


Week 3.     July 3, 4, and 5 (July 2 is a public holiday)

The Consultative Model and Joint Declaration Model 1967 - 1997
The constitutional arrangements.
The Cultural Revolution and China: its effects on Hong Kong.
The social revolution in Hong Kong and Murray Mclehose.
The looming question of 1997.
The Joint Declaration and the agreements to the hand over.

1.     Activity.     Thursday.     Visit to Macau on Wednesday July 4.
2.     Submitting project skeleton for assessment


Week 4.     July 9 10 11` and 12

The Basic Law Model 1990 - 1997

The last years of British occupation.
The democratization of Hong Kong and the last governor.
Constitutional problems.
Economy and Society.
The future of Hong Kong.
